West Alexandria, Ohio's Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, we're experts in hair testing with locations nationwide ready to assist. Typically, you'll need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or use body hair. Our tests screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more popular in drug testing procedures. They're increasingly required by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals, offering an alternative to traditional urine tests. Hair tests appeal to employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and those on probation due to their long detection window, usually up to 90 days. While urine tests are more precise for the past 5 days, hair tests are hard to tamper with and observer-collected.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair examinations has become recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair carries an extended record of alcohol and other substances by capturing biomarkers within the strands' fibers as they grow. When retrieved near the scalp, hair can offer up to a three-month surveillance timeframe for both alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat hard to tamper with, and convenient to dispatch.

Collecting a 1.5-inch segment comprising about 200 hair strands (roughly equaling the girth of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal portion for both screening and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, or examinations beyond 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. It's suggested to measure the specimen using a jeweler's scale. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, it is in reference to scalp hair solely. Body hair pertains to all non-scalp hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test outcome mainly involves four phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial introduction of a specimen into a laboratory framework. This encompasses confirming that the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and finalizing any supplementary data input not acquired through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid test for abusive substances. While Screening is a budget-friendly approach to discount drug consumption for the majority of samples, any positive screen must undergo confirmation to be permissible in court. Samples indicating presumptive positivity in Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

If a specimen is found presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample to prepare for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to alternative methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes evaluation under both the College of American Pathologists (CAP) Hair designation and holds accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug evaluations can identify drug use stretching up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a limited detection period.
  • Resistant to deceptive practices: Cheating hair drug tests is particularly challenging, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can relay a pattern of drug utilization over the long term, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent consumption: Detecting drugs in hair requires approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically command higher costs compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Outcome variations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Often referred to as "hair follicle tests," the actual analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
