In West Jefferson, Ohio, Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle drug tests. Our services are available nationwide, and our centers can conduct both drug and alcohol tests using hair samples. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required for accurate results. These tests are versatile, offering analyses for substances like drugs and ETG but can accommodate custom testing needs.

Hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent in recent years to screen for drug use. Many workplaces, legal systems, and substance abuse experts opt for them over urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug-use policies, as well as courts and probation programs, employ these tests due to their 90-day detection window, the security they provide during sample collection, and their resistance to falsification, although urine tests remain more effective for detecting very recent drug use.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers within its fibers as it grows, providing a long-term record of alcohol and other drugs. Hair collected near the scalp can offer a detection period of up to three months for substances. It is straightforward to collect, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, around 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or panels above 10, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for accurate measurement. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. Reference to head hair pertains to scalp hair only, whereas body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result incorporates four principal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step in integrating a sample into a laboratory’s system. This involves confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Though cost-effective for negating drug use in most cases, any positive screen must be verified for court admissibility. Samples with presumptive positives from Screening require further confirmation.

If Screening yields a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods like urine or oral fluid, making hair drug testing the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter window.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Tracks historical usage: Offers a usage pattern over a timeline, not just recent drug intake.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair samples.

Note: Commonly known as "hair follicle tests," the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In West Jefferson, OH, hair follicle testing stands out for its exceptional detection capabilities. Unlike traditional urine tests, hair testing can uncover drug use from a much broader timeframe, which enhances its reliability. This method offers a more comprehensive analysis of substance use history, providing a clearer picture of possible abuse patterns, thus proving to be more precise.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle tests in West Jefferson, OH offer an extended detection period, making them invaluable for employers. Capable of identifying drug use over a 90-day range, these tests give a more detailed overview of a person's substance use history. This longer detection window allows employers to assess long-term patterns, offering insight that urine tests may not provide.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

West Jefferson, OH places great trust in hair follicle tests due to their resistance to tampering. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
