Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in West Union, Ohio. If you are in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing with facilities Nationwide. A hair sample of 1.5 to 2 inches from the scalp or body is typically required. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific substances based on customized parameters.

The trend has shifted towards hair follicle drug testing in recent years. Many companies, judicial bodies, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair testing over conventional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are adopted by employers adhering to strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and those on probation. The key advantage is the extended detection window up to 90 days, conducted under supervision, thereby minimizing chances of manipulation. Nevertheless, urine tests remain the most accurate for detecting recent drug use within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of these substances by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When collected near the scalp, it can offer up to around a three-month detection window for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg, the perfect sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. Using a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample is suggested. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair is acceptable. References to head hair specifically indicate scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test encompasses four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning comprises the initial integration of a sample into the laboratory’s system, including the verification of proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial rapid examination for drugs of abuse. While it is a cost-effective means to eliminate drug use in the majority of samples, any positive screen requires confirmation to be court-admissible. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a secondary Confirmation.

For samples that test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening finding is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are pre-washed before confirmation if needed. The entire lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can detect drug usage for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have a shorter detection window.
  • Difficult to manipulate: The accuracy of results improves because hair drug tests are tough to falsify.
  • Historiographical data: It provides insight into drug use over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Can't identify recent usage: Detectability in hair takes approximately 5-7 days after drug use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally higher in cost compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth variances can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests," the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In West Union, OH, hair follicle testing outshines urine testing significantly. Hair tests offer superior detection accuracy, largely due to their extensive evaluation period. This ensures that drug or alcohol use does not go unnoticed weeks after the fact, unlike urine tests, where traces might dissipate quickly. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
