Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair drug screening in Westboro, Ohio. If a hair or alcohol test is required, our specialization in hair testing ensures that centers in all cities Nationwide can conduct these tests. For effective testing, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown of your head or from the body is typically necessary. These hair assessments can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer other tailored testing options.

In recent years, hair follicle testing has become a predominant method for drug screening. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals favor hair tests over traditional urine tests. This approach is vital for zero-tolerance policies, probation monitoring, and judicial requirements. The primary advantage is an extended detection period of up to 90 days, with observed collection to prevent tampering. However, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Accredited Drug Testing

Hair analysis is gaining recognition as a crucial method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers in the strands as they grow, offering a long-lasting detection history for substances. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection window of up to roughly 3 months for substances. It is easy to gather, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, containing about 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil), is ideal for examination and verification, providing 100mg of hair. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels over 10, it's advised to use 150mg of the specimen. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen's weight. If there is no scalp hair, a similar amount of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean only the hair on the scalp. Body hair encompasses all other types (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in the lab processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary processing of a sample into the laboratory’s database. This step involves ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and sent, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry that wasn't included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial quick assessment for substances of abuse. Screening is an affordable approach to eliminate drug usage on most samples, but a positive outcome needs verification to be permissible in legal proceedings. Samples testing presumptively positive in Screening need further confirmation.

If Screenings indicate a presumptive positive, additional hair is drawn from the original sample for Extraction. During this process, substances are withdrawn from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis the most challenging approach to execute.

Verification of any positive Screening result is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection duration: Hair drug assessments can trace substance use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine assessments which have a shorter detection timeline.
  • Hard to compromise: It is immensely challenging to bypass a hair drug assessment, making the findings more reliable.
  • Delivers historical context: It can demonstrate a user’s drug pattern over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent consumption: It takes about 5-7 days for substances to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments typically cost more than other drug examination methods.
  • Outcome variations: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: While often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis concerns the hair strand and not the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
