Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in White Oak East, Ohio. This specialized service includes hair drug and alcohol tests conducted at testing centers across all U.S. cities. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is required. Tests evaluate for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair analysis options.

Hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly prevalent for drug testing. Many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse counselors demand hair tests, which are more reliable than urine tests. They serve organizations with strict drug policies and those overseeing individuals under legal supervision. Benefits include a longer detection window up to 90 days, observed sample collection minimizing fraud. For recent drug use analysis (past 5 days), urine tests remain the best choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can capture a prolonged history of substance use through biomarkers that are incorporated into its fibers as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair offers an approximate three-month detection period for substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and it can be easily shipped.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to the width of a #2 pencil) gathered nearest to the scalp will produce about 100mg of hair, an optimal amount for analysis and verification. For EtG cases, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair can't be obtained, a comparable quantity of body hair may be taken. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, while "body hair" includes all other types, such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

Laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage where a sample is logged into the laboratory's system. This entails ensuring the sample was sealed and transported correctly, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is cost-efficient for eliminating drug use in most cases, a positive result must be confirmed for legal acceptability. Samples initially judged positive in Screening require further confirmation.

When a sample tests positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is obtained from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at lower concentrations than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing the most complex methodology.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods confirm any positive screening outcomes. All positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The entire laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests detect drug usage for a maximum of 90 days, surpassing the shorter period detected by urine tests.
  • Hard to falsify: Altering test results is highly challenging, enhancing accuracy.
  • Records usage patterns: Offers a historical pattern of drug habits over time, rather than just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Cannot determine recent intake: Drugs take about 5-7 days to show up in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests commonly cost more than other testing forms.
  • Result variation: Elements like hair color and unique growth rates can impact drug metabolite concentrations.

Reminder: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
