Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Whitehall, Ohio. Specializing in these tests, our nationwide centers can conduct your analysis. Hair from the head's crown or body, measuring 1.5 to 2 inches, is typically required. These evaluations can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or undergo other tailored options.

Recent trends in drug testing have leaned more towards using hair follicle assessments. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals are choosing hair tests over standard urine analyses. Hair tests benefit employers upholding strict no-drug-use policies, courts, and probationary individuals. This method's main advantage includes an extended detection timeline up to 90 days, monitored collection, and it's nearly cheat-proof. Nevertheless, when detecting drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol intake. Hair preserves a prolonged record of substances by capturing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. If sourced near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection window of up to about 3 months for drugs and alcohol. Collection is straightforward, tampering is relatively tough, and it's easy to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness), will provide 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests over 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is suggested. It's best to weigh the specimen using a jeweler's scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equal volume of body hair may be taken. Head hair denotes scalp hair; body hair encompasses all other types (like facial or underarm hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of integrating a sample into a laboratory's framework. This step involves ensuring the sample was appropriately sealed and transported, issuing a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any further data entry absent from an electronic custody record.

Screening performs a preliminary check for drug misuse. While Screening is a budget-friendly method to exclude most samples from drug use, a positive outcome requires confirmation for legal validity. Any samples that show a presumptive positive during Screening need additional confirmation.

If Screening identifies a sample as presumptively positive, more hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are drawn from hair at significantly lower concentrations than alternative methods (such as urine or oral fluids), making hair drug screening a challenging process.

Any positive Screening results are confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples receive washing as needed before confirmation. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP Hair designation standards and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Main benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to the shorter detection time of urine tests.
  • Cheating is difficult: Manipulating a hair drug test is challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Tracks historical usage patterns: Provides insight into drug consumption trends over time, rather than merely recent use.

Drawbacks:

  • Cannot detect recent consumption: Drugs become identifiable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug detection techniques.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though commonly called "hair follicle tests", these tests analyze the hair shaft, not the scalp's follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
