In Wilberforce, Ohio, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive solutions for hair follicle drug testing. If requiring drug or alcohol assessment using hair, our specialization lies in hair analysis, with a network of testing facilities across the country ready to conduct such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is necessary. These tests identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored for other substances.

Recently, the use of hair follicle tests has become more prevalent in drug evaluations. Various entities like employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists are opting for hair over traditional urine tests. Such tests are essential for employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, judicial settings, and probationary monitoring. Their advantage lies in a prolonged detection window of roughly 90 days, using a supervised collection method that's nearly cheat-proof. Yet for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests maintain higher accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is esteemed for identifying drug and alcohol use efficiently. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and other substances, capturing biomarkers in the hair's growth fibers. Collected close to the scalp, hair may reveal up to a 3-month detection span for alcohol and drug use. Hair gathering is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of about 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp delivers 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale is suggested for measuring the sample. Should scalp hair be lacking, a similar volume of body hair is collectable. References to head hair mean only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal processes in laboratory analysis for drug testing include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the primary processing of a sample in a lab system; this step verifies proper sealing and shipping of the sample, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes other data entries beyond the electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial, quick assessment for substance abuse. While a cost-saving measure for eliminating drug usage in the majority of samples, a verified confirmation of a positive screen is mandatory for court acceptance. Samples flagged as presumptive positives in Screening need subsequent confirmation.

When a Screening flags a sample as presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction. Drugs get extracted at much lower concentration levels in this stage than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the challenges of conducting hair drug analysis.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods confirm any positive screening results. All presumptively positive samples undergo necessary washing before confirmation. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the whole lab analysis complies with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair requirements and the ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Lengthy detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Difficult to evade: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, reinforcing test reliability.
  • Generates historical insight: It offers a portrayal of drug usage patterns over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Recent usage detection limitation: Detecting drugs in hair takes about 5-7 days.
  • Price: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Drug metabolite concentrations in hair can vary with factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences.

Note: Often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
