Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Wilkesville, Ohio. Should you require a hair drug or alcohol examination, our specialty is hair testing, and we've got testing facilities in every city across the nation capable of conducting a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body may be used. Hair tests can be examined for substances, alcohol/ETG, or other specified options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become the method of choice for substance screenings. Numerous employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists are mandating hair over traditional urine tests. This method appeals to firms with zero tolerance for drug policies, judiciary bodies, and people on probation. The main advantage is its extended detection period—up to 90 days, with observation, and is nearly cheating-proof. However, for screening within the last 5 days, urinalysis remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now acknowledged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair offers a long-term record of alcohol and drug exposure by embedding biomarkers in the strands' fibers as they grow. When hair is gathered near the scalp, it can show substance use for up to three months. Hair is easy to gather, hard to tamper with, and straightforward to send.

A 1.5-inch segment from around 200 strands of hair (similar to a #2 pencil's thickness) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg, which is perfect for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for accuracy. If head hair isn't available, an equivalent volume of body hair is acceptable. "Head hair" relates solely to scalp hair, while "body hair" pertains to all additional hair types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

There are four critical steps in the lab protocol for processing a drug testing outcome: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning begins with the sample’s introduction into the lab system. This step ensures the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and handles any extra data entry not provided by an electronic custody chain.

Screening performs an initial, swift examination for drugs. While cost-effective for excluding drug presence in most samples, positive screenings must be confirmed to hold up legally. If a Screening result is presumptively positive, secondary confirmation is necessary.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, further hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are retrieved at a significantly lower concentration from hair than in other tests (e.g., urine or oral fluids), marking hair drug testing as one of the most complex methods to execute.

Every positive screening result undergoes Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to Confirmation, all presumptive positives are washed if required. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen under the guidance of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair. Criterion Accreditation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Compared to urine tests which have a limited detection span, hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Due to the difficulty in falsifying a hair drug test, the results are more reliable.
  • Historical insights: Offers a record of drug consumption trends over a period rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Lacks immediate detection capability: Drugs generally need 5-7 days to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually incur higher costs compared to other testing techniques.
  • Outcome variations: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Often termed as "hair follicle tests", these tests actually analyze the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
