Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Wilson, Ohio. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol tests, we provide access to testing centers across the nation, ready to conduct hair examinations. Typically requiring 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body, our tests are versatile, detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly favored hair follicle testing over traditional urine tests. Many employers, court systems, and substance abuse experts now opt for hair drug tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation supervisors frequently use them due to their extended detection window, which spans up to 90 days, making them difficult to evade and ideal for observed sample collection. Nevertheless, for recent drug use detection within 5 days, urine analysis remains superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments have emerged as a robust method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shaft. When gathered near the scalp, it offers nearly a three-month detection timeframe for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and comprising around 200 strands closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments over 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. It's suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is unobtainable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be taken. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The procedure for processing a drug test result in the lab comprises four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning concerns the initial inclusion of a sample into a lab's system. This stage involves checking the correct sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry that the electronic chain of custody system may not provide.

Screening entails a preliminary swift assessment for drug use. While it is an economical method to eliminate drug use in the bulk of samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from the hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is among the most intricate approaches.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are utilized for Confirmation of any positive screenings. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing as required before confirmation. The complete laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug evaluations can reveal drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Difficulty to cheat: The complexity of cheating a hair drug test results in more accurate findings.
  • Provides historical data: It can reflect a drug use pattern over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Cost: Hair drug assessments are typically pricier than other testing approaches.
  • Variations in results: Concentration of drug metabolites in hair can be influenced by factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences.

Note: Though commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair shaft rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When it comes to spotting drug use in Wilson, OH, hair follicle tests are superior to urine tests. They boast greater detection accuracy, providing consistent and reliable results. While urine tests may be commonplace, hair tests capture a wider substance use history, painting a more complete picture of the individual's habits.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
