Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Woodsfield, Ohio. If you're seeking a hair-based drug or alcohol test, our specialty lies in hair analysis, with centers located in every city Nationwide ready to conduct such tests. To proceed, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on your scalp is required or body hair can be used as an alternative. These assessments can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific testing needs.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method of drug testing. Employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse specialists often prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Such tests are favored by employers with strict anti-drug policies, the judiciary, and individuals under legal supervision. The main advantage of these tests lies in their extended drug detection window—up to 90 days, observed during the collection process, and are highly resistant to tampering. However, for drug use detected within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged record of substance usage by embedding biomarkers within the strands. Collected near the scalp, hair can reveal alcohol and drug usage for up to three months. It is straightforward to gather, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches in length, comprising roughly 200 hair strands (similar to a #2 pencil's diameter), yields 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for evaluation and confirmation tests. For EtG, supplemental tests, or those extending beyond 10 panels, a specimen size of 150mg is advisable. It is suggested to weigh specimens using a jeweler's scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair is acceptable. Specifically, head hair pertains only to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in a lab's drug testing process comprise Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is incorporated into a lab system. This encompasses verifying that the sample is appropriately sealed and transported, allocating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional requisite data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial, swift examination for abused substances. While cost-effective in excluding substance usage from the majority of samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for legal acceptability. Samples yielding presumptive positive results during Screening require further confirmation.

Should a sample produce a presumptive positive result during Screening, more hair is extracted and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are obtained from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), a factor that makes hair drug screening particularly challenging.

Positive screenings undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptive positives are cleaned before Confirmation as necessary. The entire process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection durations.
  • Cheating is improbable: It is exceedingly challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Reveals usage history: Offers a timeline of drug use over an extended duration, rather than just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent intake: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly compared to other methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair shade and individual differences in hair growth can influence metabolite concentrations.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis pertains to the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
