In Alsuma, Oklahoma, Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing services. If you're in need of a hair or alcohol drug test, our specialty lies in hair testing, with available centers in cities across the nation that can administer these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is needed. Hair testing can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific substances based on your preferences.

Over the past few years, hair follicle drug tests have become a more popular method of drug testing. Various employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair tests rather than the traditional urine tests. This method is frequently employed by employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and individuals under probation. The main advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection timeframe for drugs, typically extending up to 90 days. The test is conducted under observation, making it nearly impervious to cheating, but for substances taken in the past 5 days, urine tests still hold the highest accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a comprehensive timeline of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair. When the hair is cut close to the scalp, it offers up to an estimated 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to ship.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches from approximately 200 hairs (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for screening and confirming results. For EtG, supplementary tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be utilized. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The primary steps for processing a drug test result in a laboratory include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step, involving the integration of a sample into a laboratory’s system. It ensures the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performs any necessary data entry not addressed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial rapid assessment for drug presence. Although Screening is cost-effective for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive result needs confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples with potential positive results in Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample is potentially positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is obtained from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this step, drugs are extracted from hair concentrations significantly lower than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug testing is one of the most complex methods.

Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, presumptive positive samples undergo washing as necessary. From Accessioning through to Confirmation, the entire process is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidance and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a much shorter detection period.
  • High resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, thereby enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Historical usage insight: It provides a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur greater costs than other methods.
  • Result variability: Aspects such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand itself, not the follicle located under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Alsuma, OK benefits from the advanced detection capabilities of hair follicle tests over traditional urine tests. The primary advantage lies in the extended detection window, offering results that reflect a longer usage history.

Hair tests triumph in terms of reliability, reducing false negatives due to their thorough detection. This makes them superior to urine tests, particularly for employers needing comprehensive assessments of potential hires.

Extended Detection Window

In Alsuma, OK, hair follicle tests provide a significant advantage with their extended detection window, identifying drug use over a period of up to 90 days. This long analysis period furnishes a clear profile of an individual's substance history.

Employers benefit from this extended timeline, as it provides more accurate insights into an applicant's or employee's past drug use behaviors, aiding in making informed staffing decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
