Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing services in Arcadia, Oklahoma. If you're in need of a drug or alcohol test via hair, we specialize in this method and have centers across all U.S. cities that conduct these tests. Generally, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body can be used. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized options.

Lately, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent in drug screening processes. Many companies, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists now prefer this over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict anti-drug policies, legal courts, and probation officers often rely on hair tests. The main advantage is its extended detection window, up to 90 days, with observed collection and high resistance to tampering.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal up to an approximately 3-month window of alcohol and drug detection. It is straightforward to collect, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of about 200 strands of hair (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample amount for both screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, additional checks, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. We recommend measuring the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, a similar quantity of body hair can be taken. When referencing head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair refers to all other types of hair (such as facial and axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning starts with the initial handling of a sample within the lab’s system. This involves confirming the sample’s proper sealing and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody process.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is economical for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Any sample that tests presumptively positive in Screening must undergo additional confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

A confirmation of any positive screening is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo a wash prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can detect drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, thus results are more reliable.
  • Offers historical insights: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: It requires around 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Though often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand itself rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Arcadia, OK, hair follicle tests demonstrate a clear advantage over urine tests. Unmatched detection accuracy is one of hair testing's key benefits. These extend far beyond regular urine screenings, detecting a broader window of substance use and delivering reliable and consistent data. Extended Detection Window

With an extended detection window, hair follicle testing in Arcadia, OK, captures up to 90 days of drug use history. Comprehensive monitoring offers employers a full picture of an individual's substance use, greatly exceeding the limitations of urine tests. This makes hair testing an essential tool for informed employment and probation decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
