Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Beggs, Oklahoma. Specializing in hair analysis for drugs and alcohol, our certified centers span across every city in the nation, ready to conduct hair evaluations. Typically, a sample length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the scalp or body suffices. Various tests like drug, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair analyses are available.

In recent times, the inclination towards a hair follicle drug evaluation has grown. This method is being increasingly adopted by employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals over traditional urine assessments. Hair follicle tests appeal to employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and those on probation. Their advantage lies in an extended detection window—up to 90 days—utilizing a monitored collection technique that is hard to manipulate. However, for detecting recent drug intake, within five days, urine tests remain unmatched in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is widely acknowledged as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a prolonged history of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the strands of developing hair. When hair is taken near the scalp, it can reveal a detection period of almost three months for various substances. Hair collection is effortless, relatively tamper-proof, and straightforward to dispatch.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising roughly 200 strands of hair (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) located near the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for evaluation and verification. For EtG, supplemental assessments, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. We propose measuring the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be gathered. When discussing head hair, it refers solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

Processing a drug testing result in the lab involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s framework. This includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and mailed, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary test for drug presence. While it's a cost-effective method to eliminate drug use in the majority of samples, any positive screen must be validated for court acceptance. Samples that show presumptive positive results in screening require additional confirmation.

If a sample appears positive during the Screening phase, extra hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are removed from hair at a much lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a challenging procedure.

The Confirmation step for any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples flagged as positive initially are washed before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter window.
  • Difficult to evade: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, ensuring more precise results.
  • Traceable usage data: Provides a timeline of drug use over an extended period, not limited to recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incognition of recent use: Detection of drugs in hair typically takes around 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can alter the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Often termed "hair follicle tests," the procedure analyzes the hair strand itself and not the follicle residing beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When contrasting hair follicle testing with traditional urine assessments in Beggs, OK, the superior detection range and accuracy of hair analysis become evident. These tests excel in reliability, offering drug use insights that urine tests might overlook. Hair testing ensures better substance abuse monitoring due to a longer detection timeframe and immaculate data fidelity.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window offered by hair follicle testing is a key asset in Beggs, OK. Unlike shorter-term alternatives, it provides insights into drug use spanning up to 90 days. This broader scope gives employers a comprehensive overview of an applicant or employee's substance history, aiding in more informed hiring and monitoring decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
