In Blanchard, Oklahoma, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. For those requiring drug or alcohol tests, we are experts in hair testing, with facilities available nationwide for convenience. Typically, at least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is needed. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and can be customized as needed.

Over the past few years, hair follicle drug tests have been increasingly used for substance detection. Employers, legal entities, and substance abuse specialists often prefer these tests to traditional urine tests. They are favored by entities with strict no-drug policies and probation requirements. These tests offer a significant advantage with their long detection window, typically reaching up to 90 days, and are conducted under supervision to ensure integrity. However, urine tests remain more effective for drug use detection in the immediate past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair traps indicators within its strands, offering a prolonged record of substance use. When retrieved near the scalp, it can reveal up to a roughly 3-month period of substance activity. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively unalterable, and easily transportable.

An ideal specimen for assessment and validation is a 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands, roughly comparable to the girth of a #2 pencil, closest to the scalp, yielding 100mg of hair. For advanced tests like EtG, additional assessments, and/or evaluations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is suggested. We advise weighing the hair on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is absent, a similar quantity of body hair can be substituted. Here, head hair specifically pertains to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal steps in laboratory drug test processing include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning initiates with integrating a sample into a laboratory's database. This process ensures the sample is properly sealed and transported, a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN) is allotted, and any additional manual data entries missing from an electronic chain of custody are done.

Screening provides an initial rapid check for substances of abuse. While it's an economical approach for deactivating drug usage in most samples, confirmed evidence in a judicial setting requires positive screens to be validated. Any screen-positives in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

A Screen-Stage positive result prompts additional hair extracts for the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are sourced at significantly lower levels from hair compared to other types (e.g., urine, oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging.

Positive screenings are confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Necessary presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation. The entire lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, aligns with the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can trace drug usage up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with a shorter timeline.
  • Hard to deceive: Hair drug evaluations are tough to manipulate, rendering the results more truthful.
  • Chronological substance data: Offers insights into prolonged substance patterns, besides recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Non-detection of recent use: Approximately 5-7 days are needed before drugs appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses tend to be costlier than other methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Widely termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Blanchard, OK
Hair follicle tests offer superior detection accuracy compared to urine tests. Hair testing can reveal patterns of drug use over an extended period, providing a more comprehensive view of an individual's substance use history. This capability makes it a preferred choice for employers seeking reliable screening methods.

Unlike urine tests, which are best for recent drug use, hair testing significantly reduces the chance of producing false negatives. Its reliability ensures that results reflect true substance use, enhancing the credibility of testing outcomes.

Extended Detection Window

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
