Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug screenings in Boatman, Oklahoma. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis, with facilities across the country ready to perform tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be used. Hair tests can be processed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored screening options.

Lately, hair follicle drug testing has become more commonplace in drug testing procedures. Various employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts now favor it over the conventional urine test. Hair tests are chosen by employers with strict no-drug policies, the judiciary, and probationary settings. A key advantage of a hair test is its extended detection timeframe, reaching up to 90 days, conducted under supervision, making deception nearly impossible. Nonetheless, for detecting recent drug use in the past five days, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair screening is now recognized as an effective tool for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended history of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. Collected near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a three-month detection span for alcohol and other drugs. The process of collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A hair specimen of 1.5 inches with roughly 200 strands (akin to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or screenings beyond 10 panels, 150mg of hair is suggested. Using a jeweler’s scale is advisable for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair may be used. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process of lab testing a drug sample involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step of processing a sample within a lab's system. It involves checking that the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary evaluation for substances of abuse. Though Screening is a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug use in most samples, confirmation is necessary for any screen to be admissible in legal contexts. Samples showing a presumptive positive in Screening require a follow-up confirmation.

For samples that are presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. At this point, drugs are isolated from hair at a considerably lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), explaining why hair testing is a complex method to execute.

Confirmation of any presumptive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples presumed positive are cleansed before confirmation as required. The whole laboratory workflow from Accessioning through Confirmation is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and meets the ISO / IEC 17025 standards for accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days prior, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to subvert: Manipulating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, leading to more reliable results.
  • Offers background information: It shows a sequence of drug use over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: Drugs take around 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Variability in outcomes: Hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Choose Hair Follicle Testing Over Urine Tests?

  • In Boatman, OK, hair tests surpass traditional urine testing through their extended detection periods and superior accuracy.
  • Hair testing offers a clearer history of drug use, detecting usage up to 90 days prior, a feat urine tests can't achieve.
  • The reliability of hair testing makes it a preferred choice for businesses and legal entities aiming to maintain integrity and safety.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
