In Boise, Oklahoma, Accredited Drug Testing offers exceptional hair follicle drug examinations. Whether for drugs or alcohol, their expertise in hair testing is unmatched with facilities available across the nation for easy access. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be used. The analysis extends to detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or bespoke options.

Hair follicle testing has increasingly gained traction in drug detection over recent years. Many employers, legal entities, and addiction specialists now prefer it over traditional urine tests. Companies and legal institutions seeking a zero-tolerance policy lean towards hair tests due to their 90-day drug detection capability, making fraud nearly impossible. For identifying recent drug use within five days, urine tests still hold accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair offers an extended timeline of drug and alcohol use by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When cut close to the scalp, hair can reveal a detection timeframe of up to three months for drugs and alcohol. Hair is easy to collect, provides some resistance to tampering, and is straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of around 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) from nearest the scalp is needed for an optimal 100mg sample for both screening and verification. For EtG, additives, and tests beyond 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is suggested. Should scalp hair be missing, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be collected. The term "head hair" pertains exclusively to scalp hair, while "body hair" includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into the lab’s system. This step involves checking that the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data entry omitted by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening comprises an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. While Screening is a cost-effective means to initially rule out drug use for the majority of samples, results indicating a positive screen must be confirmed to be valid in court. Any samples testing presumptively positive in Screening need further confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction preparation. At this step, drugs are extracted from hair at notably lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), marking hair drug screening as the most challenging methodology to execute.

Any positive screening result undergoes Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are washed prior to Confirmation as deemed necessary. The comprehensive lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and aligns with the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests monitor drug use for as long as 90 days, contrasting with urine tests which have shorter detection spans.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating on a hair drug test proves very challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: It reveals patterns of drug use over time—not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests typically incur higher expenses compared to other testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although frequently termed as "hair follicle tests," the test examines the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
