Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Brent, Oklahoma. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, Accredited Drug Testing is the expert, featuring testing facilities nationwide for hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown or body can be used. Hair tests can be configured to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific hair testing solutions.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for drug testing. Various employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair drug tests instead of the traditional urine tests. This test is preferred by employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationary individuals due to its extensive detection period for drugs, which lasts up to 90 days, is collected under supervision, and is hard to tamper with. Nevertheless, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, the urine test remains the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair examination has emerged as a formidable method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a historical record of alcohol and various drugs by trapping biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair offers a detection period of roughly 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample containing around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil in size) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the ideal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or examinations beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. It's advisable to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent volume of body hair may be gathered. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test laboratory process involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample undergoes initial processing into a laboratory’s system. This includes confirming that the sample was sealed and delivered correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid check for drug abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen needs confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples that test presumptively positive during Screening require subsequent confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in methodologies such as urine or oral fluid, which makes hair drug screening the most challenging to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives undergo washing prior to confirmation as required. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug usage for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which cover a shorter duration.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is quite difficult, enhancing result reliability.
  • Historical data provision: It can reveal a pattern of drug consumption over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically have higher costs compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Brent, OK, hair follicle testing offers superior advantages over urine testing. With an extensive detection period, hair testing provides a comprehensive understanding of substance use patterns. Unlike traditional tests, the accuracy of hair tests is hard to surpass, ensuring employers receive reliable data, enhancing trust in this modern methodology.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
