In Bull Hollow, Oklahoma, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialization in hair testing is supported by numerous testing centers across all U.S. cities. Typically, you'll need between 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body for testing. Our hair tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer diverse customized options.

The popularity of hair follicle drug tests has surged in recent years, often replacing traditional urine tests among employers, judiciary systems, and Substance Abuse professionals. This testing method caters to employers with stringent anti-drug policies, judicial settings, and individuals under probation. A crucial advantage is its extended detection capability—up to 90 days—and the collection process minimizes cheating. Nonetheless, urine tests remain more accurate for recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Considered a potent mechanism for detecting drug and alcohol consumption, hair testing offers a comprehensive retrospective by encapsulating biomarkers within the hair shaft. When clipped close to the scalp, hair reveals substance use over roughly 90 days. Collection is straightforward, hampering adulteration, and facilitates easy transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 strands (comparable to a #2 pencil in width) nearest the scalp translates to 100mg, forming an optimal sample for screening and validation. For advanced tests beyond 10 panels or EtG enhancements, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. Utilize a jeweler's scale for precise measurement. If scalp hair is insufficient, a matching quantity of body hair is acceptable. "Head hair" pertains exclusively to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other varieties (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test result process comprises four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning introduces the sample to the lab's system, ensuring it was appropriately sealed and shipped, is assigned a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any outstanding data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides an initial appraisal for drugs. Though cost-effective for excluding most drug use, a positive Screen mandates validation for legal acceptance. Samples yielding positive presumptions during Screening require subsequent confirmation.

In cases of positive presumptions, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for further processing in the Extraction phase. This stage extracts substances at a smaller concentration than alternatives (e.g., urine, saliva), establishing hair drug screening as a challenging test to conduct.

Verification of any positive screen is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples flagged as presumptive positives undergo washing prior to confirmation as necessary. The full lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Capable of identifying drug use for up to 3 months, surpassing the shorter timeframe of urine tests.
  • Resistant to cheating: The reliability of results is bolstered by the challenge of manipulating a hair drug test.
  • Chronicles substance use: Offers insights into drug consumption patterns over continue periods, not strictly recent use.

Limitations:

  • Delayed detection: Drugs typically become traceable in hair after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally priced higher than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth rates can influence the concentration of drug metabolites.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests," the focus is on analyzing the hair strand itself, excluding the follicle within the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
