Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analyses in Burns Flat, Oklahoma. For hair drug or alcohol tests, our experts in hair testing provide services nationwide, with numerous centers in every city ready to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body are required for testing. These hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other special testing preferences.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle tests. Numerous employers, legal courts, and Substance Abuse specialists now opt for hair tests over standard urine ones. Hair follicle evaluations are favored by employers with strict drug policies, courts, and probationary individuals. The key advantage is a protracted detection period, usually spanning 90 days, with an observed collection that is nearly foolproof. Nonetheless, urine tests remain most accurate for drug use detection within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become a recognized method for detecting substance use. It offers a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When the sample is taken near the scalp, hair can provide an approximate detection duration of up to 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the recommended amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and tests exceeding 10 panels, it is advised to use 150mg of the sample. It is recommended to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair may be used. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of incorporating a sample into a lab’s system. This process involves confirming the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input not available from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial, rapid assessment to detect drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-effective method to rule out drug use for most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be legally valid. Samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening require secondary confirmation.

Should a sample show presumptive positivity in Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening a challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is challenging to fake a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Provides historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs typically require 5-7 days to be identified in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", this test actually examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
