In Calumet, Oklahoma, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests. For anyone needing a hair or alcohol analysis, we lead in this testing field and have centers in every city across the nation ready to perform hair tests. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is typically required from the crown of the head, or from the body in most scenarios. The tests are capable of detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized for other options.

Recently, conducting drug tests has shifted towards using hair follicle methods more often. A number of employers, court systems, and Substance Abuse specialists are opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine analyses. These tests are favored by employers enforcing zero-tolerance to drug use, judicial environments, and individuals on probation. One key advantage is the extended detection window for drug use of up to 90 days, which is collected under observation, making it almost impossible to bypass. However, for drug screening within the past 5 days, the urine test remains the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a formidable method for identifying substance use. Hair stores an extended timeline of substances by integrating biomarkers within its growing strand. With a sample taken near the scalp, hair can present up to a 3-month window for detecting substances like alcohol and drugs. It is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, approximately 200 strands of hair (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil), nearest the scalp provides 100mg, ideal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or those over 10 panels, collecting 150mg is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair is not an option, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses other types (like facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory assessment of a drug test sample involves four fundamental steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial inclusion of a sample into a lab's processes. This phase involves ensuring that the sample was correctly sealed and transported, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening serves as a preliminary assessment for substances of abuse. While it is a cost-efficient means to discount substance use in most cases, any positive result requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples that are presumptively positive during Screening need a secondary confirmation.

In cases of presumptive positives during Screening, more hair is drawn from the specimen for the Extraction phase. In this phase, substances are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), making hair drug screening a more intricate process.

Every presumptive positive result is confirmed using techniques like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples that appear positive are cleansed before confirmation as required. Throughout the process from Accessioning to Confirmation, the procedure undergoes evaluation under both the College of American Pathologists' Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify substance use for as long as 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection scope of urine tests.
  • Resistant to deception: Hair drug tests are notably difficult to manipulate, resulting in more precise outcomes.
  • Records historical usage: Hair tests can reveal a pattern of substance use over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent consumption: Detecting substances in hair requires about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically pricier than other testing methodologies.
  • Variable results: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite being referred to as "hair follicle tests," they actually examine the strand of hair, not the hair follicle below the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
