In Cameron, Oklahoma, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol assessments, our specialty lies in hair testing. Operating nationwide, we have centers in every city equipped to perform these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair suffices. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and accommodate other personalized testing requirements.

Recently, the hair follicle drug test method has become increasingly prevalent in drug testing protocols. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts prefer hair drug tests over the traditional urine test. Organizations with stringent drug policies, courts, and probationary programs utilize these tests. The primary advantage of hair testing is its extended detection span—up to 90 days—collected under direct observation, making tampering highly unlikely. Nonetheless, for detecting recent drug use within the past five days, urine testing remains the most precise choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessment has emerged as a formidable method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands offer an extended history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of hair as it grows. When procured near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use over roughly a three-month span. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches comprising around 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and validation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or assays exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale, it is recommended to weigh the sample. In cases where scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent volume of body hair can be collected. The term head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other varieties of hair (facial, armpit, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing laboratory process encompasses four essential stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a sample within a laboratory's framework. This step involves ensuring the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary rapid evaluation for substances of abuse. While this step is an economical means to eliminate most samples with no drug use, a positive result from this stage needs further confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples presumptively positive during Screening necessitate a second confirmation step.

In scenarios where a sample shows presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction process. During Extraction, substances are isolated from hair at a notably lower concentration than seen in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the challenge of hair drug screening.

Positive Screening results are validated via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positivity are cleansed before Confirmation if needed. The comprehensive lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 norms.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug tests can unveil drug consumption for as long as 90 days, in contrast to urine tests that have a briefer detection timeframe.
  • Difficulty to manipulate: It is exceedingly challenging to deceive a hair drug test, ensuring greater result precision.
  • Offers historical insight: This test can delineate a pattern of drug use across time, not just recent activities.

Limitations:

  • No recent detection: It typically takes about 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair strands.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the levels of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Cameron, OK
In comparing hair follicle testing to traditional urine tests, several advantages become apparent. Hair tests offer superior detection accuracy and reliability, capturing a broader history of drug use. Unlike urine tests, hair analysis screens for substances over a much longer duration, making it a better choice for employers seeking comprehensive insights into their workforce's substance use.

Additionally, hair testing's difficulty to tamper with enhances its credibility. Unlike urine samples, which can be manipulated, hair offers a more genuine reflection of a person’s drug history. This added security makes hair testing a more dependable solution for maintaining workplace safety and integrity.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Cameron, OK
Hair follicle testing offers an expansive detection window, up to 90 days, providing a thorough view of an individual’s drug use history. This extensive period allows employers to better understand the long-term habits of employees or applicants, ensuring they maintain a drug-free environment.

By leveraging this prolonged detection period, organizations can make more informed decisions regarding personnel and policy compliance. The comprehensive data provided through hair analysis allows businesses to uphold their standards effectively.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
