Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Carpenter, Oklahoma. Whether you need testing for drugs or alcohol, we are experts in hair analysis. Our testing facilities are available nationwide, including in all major cities, to conduct hair tests. Typically, candidates need at least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on their head, though body hair can also be used. Hair specimen tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and can be customized for specific testing needs.

Over the past few years, hair follicle drug tests have become a preferred method for conducting drug screenings. Employers, legal entities, and substance abuse professionals are opting for hair testing over conventional urine tests. Particularly for organizations with strict no-drug policies, this method is favored due to its extensive detection period, up to 90 days, and its witnessed collection process that virtually eliminates the risk of cheating. If recent drug use (within five days) needs to be screened, the urine test remains the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective approach for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers in the strands, offering an extensive history of substance use. When taken nearest to the head, hair samples can offer a detection period of up to around three months for alcohol and drugs. It is straightforward to gather, hard to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with roughly 200 hair strands (around the width of a #2 pencil) taken nearest to the head equals 100mg, the perfect sample size for testing. For EtG, extras, or tests exceeding ten panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If head hair can't be obtained, a similar amount of body hair might be used. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other hair varieties (like facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory drug test processing involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the process of entering a sample into a lab’s system initially. This involves ensuring the sample was properly sealed and sent, attributing a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and conducting any further data entry not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid check for drug presence. Screening is cost-effective for negating drug use in many samples, but a positive screen must be verified for legal acceptance. Any samples that test positive initially require secondary confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive in Screening, more hair is extracted for Extraction. Here, drugs are removed from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other techniques (like urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug screening is the most complex methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screen is done through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Every presumptive positive sample is cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection time.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, making the results more reliable.
  • Supplies historical context: It provides insight into drug use over time, instead of just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent ingestion: Drugs become noticeable in hair after an estimated 5-7 days.
  • Price: Hair drug tests are typically costlier compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Results variability: Hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests," the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not on the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
