Accredited Drug Testing offers full hair follicle drug assessments in Cashion, Oklahoma. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol examination, we specialize in such tests with facilities available throughout all major cities nationwide. Generally, hair from the head or body, measuring 1.5 to 2 inches, is needed for evaluation. Hair samples can be examined for drug and alcohol (ETG) use, along with other tailored testing options.

The preference for hair follicle testing over traditional urine testing has increased over the years. Numerous employers, legal courts, and Substance Abuse experts now demand a hair drug test as opposed to the usual urine analysis. This method is favored by employers who enforce strict drug-free policies, including courts and individuals under probation. The main advantage of using a hair follicle drug assessment is its extended drug detection span, which can reveal substance use for up to 90 days through monitored collection, making it nearly uncheatable. Nonetheless, for identifying drug use in the last 5 days, urine testing remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains long-term evidence of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the growing hair strand's fibers. When hair is collected near the scalp, it offers up to an estimated three-month detection period for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (about the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or testing beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's best to weigh the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. When discussing head hair, we refer specifically to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Procedure Summary

The principal stages in the lab processing of a drug test are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary handling of a sample within a laboratory’s system. This entails confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a rapid preliminary test for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use for most samples, a positive result must be confirmed to be permissible in court. Samples that are presumptively positive during Screening require a further confirmatory test.

If a sample tests presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction process. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at far lower concentrations than through alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is the most complex method to conduct.

Confirmation of a positive screen result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptively positive are washed as needed before confirmation. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug tests:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is very difficult, which makes the results more precise.
  • Offers historical patterns: It can show a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Unable to detect recent usage: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier compared to other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the examination analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
