In Castle, Oklahoma, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is unrivaled, with testing centers situated in every city Nationwide capable of conducting the test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required from the head or body. Our hair tests analyze for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized testing options.

Over the years, hair follicle drug tests have become a preferred method for drug testing. More employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts are choosing this method over traditional urine tests. Firms with zero-tolerance drug policies, legal entities, and probation individuals employ hair tests for their extended detection window that can track drug use for up to 90 days. The process is observed, reducing the likelihood of tampering. However, for drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain unsurpassed in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective measure for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the strands of growing hair, it provides a comprehensive history of substance intake. When sourced close to the scalp, hair offers an approximately 3-month detection window for alcohol and substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, fairly tricky to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (about the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg, which is the ideal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests over 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair can’t be acquired, a similar quantity of body hair may be utilized. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary steps in the lab processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into a lab’s system. This step ensures the sample was sealed and sent correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a rapid preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to rule out drug usage for most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation in order to be court-admissible. Any samples with presumptively positive results during Screening need further confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the main specimen for Extraction preparation. At this stage, drugs are removed from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (ex. urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is conducted via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples are washed before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is subjected to review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug consumption for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: It is extremely challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing result fidelity.
  • Delivers historical information: It can demonstrate a pattern of drug use across a timeline, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although often dubbed "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis is on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Castle, OK has observed a growing preference for hair follicle testing over urine testing. The advanced detection capabilities of hair tests provide superior accuracy, making them ideal for contexts requiring detailed drug use history.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
