In Cayuga, Oklahoma, Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing services. Specializing in hair and alcohol testing, our centers across cities nation-wide can conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required. These hair samples can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other tests.

The hair follicle drug test has become more prevalent for drug testing in recent years. Preferred by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts over urine tests, it's crucial for zero-tolerance workplaces and those on probation. Its primary advantages include a detection period of up to 90 days, observed collection, and resistance to manipulation. Nonetheless, urine tests remain the most reliable for detecting recent drug use in the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the hair strand fibers. When collected near the scalp, hair can provide a detection period of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and approximately 200 hair strands (about the diameter of a #2 pencil) from close to the scalp will yield 100mg, the ideal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is recommended. We suggest weighing the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair may be obtained. By head hair, we refer specifically to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps involved in processing a drug test result at the lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial integration of a sample into the lab's system. This step verifies proper sealing and shipping, assigns a discreet LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any outstanding data entry not managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. While cost-effective for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be valid in legal contexts. Presumptively positive samples in Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

For samples that are presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted at much lower levels than with other methods (like urine or oral fluid), which explains why hair drug screening is the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening result utilizes GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, samples testing presumptively positive are cleansed as necessary. The full lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation is monitored under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to the shorter detection window of urine tests.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is difficult, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Chronic data provision: It reveals a drug use pattern over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • No detection of recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual growth rates can impact drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis pertains to the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair and urine testing in Cayuga, OK, hair follicle testing stands superior. Hair tests provide exceptional detection accuracy over longer periods. Unlike urine tests, hair analysis covers a wider window, catching drug usage up to 90 days, making it nearly impossible to manipulate.

Employers and officials benefit from hair testing due to its extended reliability. While urine tests are useful for recent use, hair tests ensure comprehensive analysis, enhancing workplace safety.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
