In Cedar Crest, Oklahoma, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Need a hair drug or alcohol analysis? We specialize in hair testing across the nation, with centers in every city that can perform hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body might be necessary. Hair testing can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored options.

Hair follicle drug tests have become more prominent in recent years. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals increasingly favor these tests over urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probationers utilize hair follicle testing because it can detect up to 90 days of drug use, is collected under observation, and is nearly impossible to manipulate. However, for drug use detection within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair captures a long-lasting record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers in the strands as they grow. When taken near the scalp, hair can present a detection window of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. It is easy to obtain, relatively hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample, consisting of about 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp, provides 100mg of hair, which is ideal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. We suggest determining the specimen weight with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, a similar amount of body hair can be used. "Head hair" pertains to scalp hair only. "Body hair" refers to any other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of drug test results includes four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial processing of a sample entering a lab’s system. This involves ensuring the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any outstanding data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a rapid preliminary check for drugs. While Screening is a cost-effective method to dismiss drug usage in most samples, positive results require confirmation to be legally valid. All presumptive positives in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is drawn from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drug compounds are obtained from hair at much lower concentrations than with other methods (like urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is one of the most challenging approaches.

Confirmation of any positive screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as required. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to deceive: Manipulating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can exhibit a pattern of drug usage over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally costlier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the test itself assesses the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Cedar Crest, OK, hair follicle testing trumps urine testing due to its accuracy and reliability. Unlike urine tests, it provides an extended detection window, revealing substance histories over a 90-day period.

Hair testing's enhanced detection capabilities significantly outmatch urine tests, offering superior insights into long-term substance use and better supporting zero-tolerance policies.

Hair follicle testing in Cedar Crest, OK, offers a substantial 90-day detection window for drug use. This extended range allows employers a more comprehensive understanding of an individual’s substance use history.

By extending the detection period, hair testing provides a thorough view of an applicant's behavior, setting it apart from other testing methods that cover shorter time spans.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in Cedar Crest, OK, offer a tamper-resistant method of drug screening. Due to the nature of hair samples, the risk of adulteration is greatly minimized, ensuring the integrity of results.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
