Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Cleora, Oklahoma. If hair or alcohol testing is needed, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in these tests with centers nationwide capable of conducting hair tests. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown or body is typically necessary. Hair analysis is available for a variety of tests, including drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing.

Recently, the incorporation of hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are favoring the hair test over the traditional urine test. This method is preferred by entities with zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial systems, and probation cases. The advantage of hair follicle tests is their extended detection window, up to 90 days, amidst an observable collection process, making tampering nearly impossible. Nevertheless, urine tests remain the leading choice for detecting drug use within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is emerging as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term timeline of alcohol and drug intake by encasing biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When taken from the scalp area, hair can reveal drug or alcohol exposure for up to a three-month period. It is straightforward to gather, hard to tamper with, and convenient to send.

An optimal sample for analysis is a 1.5-inch segment consisting of around 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) taken nearest the scalp, yielding 100mg of hair. For EtG, add-ons, and/or assays exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg portion is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale is suggested to measure the specimen. If scalp hair can't be acquired, a corresponding amount of body hair can be used. References to head hair denote scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other kinds (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four essential phases in processing a drug test result in a laboratory are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary handling of a sample within a lab’s system, which includes confirming the proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning it a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) at random, and completing any omitted data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening entails a preliminary scan for drug presence. While it is a cost-efficient strategy to invalidate drug use in most cases, any positive results necessitate confirmation to be accepted in legal scenarios. Samples positive in Screening undergo further confirmation.

Should a sample test positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial specimen for Extraction. This stage involves extracting drugs from hair at much lower traces compared to other techniques (like urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is notably challenging.

Confirmation of any positive results is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples found presumptively positive are cleaned before confirmation if needed. The complete laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair program and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug screenings can disclose drug use for as long as 90 days, as opposed to urine tests with a briefer detection period.
  • Cheating is challenging: Cheating on a hair drug test is very difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It can expose trends in drug usage over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Lacks recent use detection: It requires roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is generally costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Despite being commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
