Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Cold Springs, Oklahoma. For those requiring a hair-based drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this service, boasting testing facilities in every city nationwide for hair analysis. Individuals should have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on their head, or, alternatively, body hair may be used in most situations. Hair assessments can be conducted for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

In recent times, the inclusion of hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent in drug screening methods. Numerous employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts now opt for hair drug evaluations over the traditional urine tests. Hair follicle screens are favored by companies with strict anti-drug policies, judicial institutions, and probationary individuals. The primary advantage of this method is a substantially extended drug detection window of up to 90 days, involving a supervised collection process, making it nearly fraud-proof. However, for identifying drug use within the past five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair chronicles a prolonged history of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand as it grows. When obtained near the scalp, hair can suggest up to an approximately 3-month observation window for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy for transport.

A 1.5-inch section comprising roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for evaluation and affirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or assessments exceeding 10 panels, a specimen amount of 150mg is advisable. It is suggested to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent portion of body hair is acceptable. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Whereas, body hair refers to all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four critical stages in the lab handling of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the first phase of integrating a sample into a lab's system. This includes verifying the sample is sealed and transported correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any missing data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary quick assessment for drug abuse. While Screening is a cost-effective method to eliminate drug presence in most samples, a positive result demands confirmation to be permissible in legal settings. Any samples that are initially positive in Screening necessitate a secondary validation.

If a specimen is tentatively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from the hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening particularly challenging.

Authentication of any positive Screening result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All initially positive samples are cleaned before confirmation as required. The entire laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection range: Hair drug evaluations can identify drug intake for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have a more limited detection span.
  • Cheating resistance: It's notably challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of outcomes.
  • Histories of drug use: It can display a pattern of drug consumption over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent consumption: It takes roughly 5-7 days for substances to be noticeable in hair.
  • Expenditure: Hair drug assessments are typically costlier than other means of drug testing.
  • Result variances: Elements such as hair pigmentation and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Despite sometimes being called "hair follicle tests", the test in fact examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
