Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Cole, Oklahoma. For those in need of hair or alcohol testing, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in hair tests, and possesses centers across all cities nationwide to carry out these tests. A length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is generally required from your scalp, and body hair might be used alternatively. Hair tests are available for various drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing protocols.

Lately, drug testing procedures increasingly incorporate hair follicle testing. Numerous employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer using hair drug tests over the traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are favored by workplaces with strict no-drug policies, legal authorities, and individuals on probation. The major advantage of hair follicle tests is their extended detection window, normally up to 90 days, with a directly observed collection process that is extremely difficult to deceive. Notably, for drug use within the last five days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an efficient method for detecting alcohol and drug consumption. Hair records a prolonged history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fiber of the growing strand. When clipped near the scalp, it offers insights into alcohol and drug usage spanning up to about three months. It is straightforward to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A section measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 hair strands (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, will produce 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and validation. For EtG, extras, and/or evaluations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. We advise using a jeweler's scale for specimen measurement. If scalp hair is absent, a comparable quantity of body hair can be retrieved. By "head hair," we're indicating only scalp hair. "Body hair" encompasses all other hair types (such as facial hair, axillary hair, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test outcome encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In the Accessioning step, the sample undergoes initial processing into the lab system. This stage ensures the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, allocates an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and wraps up any supplementary data input missed by an electronic chain of custody system.

The Screening step involves conducting a swift preliminary assessment for drug usage. While it offers a budget-friendly means to discount drug consumption for the majority of samples, a positive Screen must be confirmed for court admissibility. Any presumptively positive samples in Screening require further confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial collection and readied for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are separated from hair at concentrations far lower than found in other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which accounts for hair drug screening being the most challenging to conduct.

Positive Screening results undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All samples showing presumptive positivity are cleaned as required before Confirmation. The entire lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and accreditation under ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug testing can identify drug usage over a 90-day span, unlike urine tests which have a narrower window.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Manipulating a hair drug test is extraordinarily challenging, leading to more precise outcomes.
  • Provides historical data: It enables identification of drug use patterns over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Cost: Typically, hair drug tests incur higher expenses compared to other drug testing approaches.
  • Variations in results: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although frequently labeled as "hair follicle tests", the examination targets the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
