In Connerville, Oklahoma, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol examination, our expertise in hair testing is complemented by testing facilities across the nation ready to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp or body is necessary. Our hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific needs.

The popularity of hair follicle drug tests has surged recently. Courts, employers, and Substance Abuse experts often prefer them over traditional urine tests due to their effectiveness. These tests are favored by employers with strict drug-free regulations, courts, and probationary programs. The standout advantage of hair follicle tests is the extended detection range, often up to 90 days, executed with observation and nearly foolproof integrity. However, urine tests remain the go-to for detecting drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective means for identifying the use of alcohol and drugs. It offers an extended history by capturing biomarkers in the fibers of the developing hair strand. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal up to approximately a 90-day timeframe for detecting drugs and alcohol. Hair is easy to collect, not easily tampered with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of roughly 200 hair strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp equates to 100mg of hair, the preferred amount for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or screenings beyond 10 panels, a total of 150mg of hair is advised. We recommend using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a comparable amount of body hair may be used. In reference to head hair, this is specifically scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The four fundamental phases in processing a laboratory drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary procedure of integrating a sample into a lab’s framework. It encompasses ensuring the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry not fulfilled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening signifies an initial rapid check for potential drug use. While Screening is cost-efficient for eliminating drug usage in most cases, a positive finding must be verified for legal admissibility. Any samples that test preliminarily positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample tests preliminarily positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. At this step, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to alternative methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a challenging method to execute.

Any positive result from screening is verified through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples indicating presumptive positivity are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the certification to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection window: Hair drug assessments can detect drug consumption for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to subvert: It is extremely difficult to tamper with a hair drug assessment, enhancing result reliability.
  • Offers historical insights: It can demonstrate a pattern of drug usage over time, rather than just immediate use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations are usually costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result disparities: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: While often referred to as "hair follicle tests", the examination itself involves the hair strand rather than the hair follicle below the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
