Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Copan, Oklahoma. If you're seeking an alcohol or drug hair test, we are specialists with testing locations available across the nation, equipped to conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required. Hair tests can be tailored to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and more.

There's been a notable increase in the use of hair follicle drug tests for drug screening in recent years. Many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse professionals prefer these over traditional urine tests due to the expansive detection period hair tests offer, typically up to 90 days. This supervised method is unparalleled in accuracy, though for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests are more reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drugs by incorporating biomarkers into the growing hair strand's fibers. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to about 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of roughly 200 strands of hair (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the ideal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and tests exceeding 10 panels, it's suggested to obtain 150mg of the sample. It's advised to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a similar amount of body hair may be collected. "Head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair. "Body hair" pertains to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase of processing a sample into the lab's system. This step includes verifying the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary additional data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial quick assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening is an economical means to eliminate drug use in the majority of cases, a positive screen must be confirmed to be valid in court. Any samples that are presumptively positive during Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive during the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are removed from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to conduct.

Any positive screening result is confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples suspected to be positive are cleansed before confirmation if needed. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug tests are capable of detecting drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, resulting in more reliable results.
  • Provides historical information: It can illustrate a drug use pattern over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to show up in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests," the test itself examines the hair strand and not the scalp's hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
