At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services for Crescent, Oklahoma. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair analysis, with accessible testing centers in every city nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head's crown or elsewhere on the body can suffice. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailor-made testing options.

Recently, the preference for conducting drug tests has shifted towards hair follicle methods. Many businesses, legal entities, and addiction specialists are now opting for hair testing over traditional urine tests. Such tests are ideal for employers with stringent drug-free rules, courts, or individuals under probation. Hair follicle testing's key advantage is a prolonged detection window, usually extending to 90 days, with an overseen sample collection process that’s hard to tamper with. However, for detecting recent substance use in the last 5 days, urine tests are still the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair testing has emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair traps biomarkers within the fibers of its growing strands, allowing it to offer an extended historical view of drug and alcohol use. When collected directly at the scalp, hair can reveal a detection window of up to three months for drugs and alcohol. The collection process of hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches from roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) taken nearest to the scalp yields approximately 100mg of hair, an optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG testing, additional panels, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to measure the specimen's weight. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable amount of body hair may be utilized. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair, while body hair pertains to all other types (like facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

There are four fundamental steps involved in processing a drug test result in the laboratory: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample undergoes preliminary processing into the laboratory's system. This includes confirming that the sample was appropriately sealed and transported, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening is an economical method for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for legal acceptance. Any samples that test presumptively positive during Screening mandate a second confirmation.

When a sample tests presumptively positive at the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial specimen for the Extraction process. During this step, drugs are extracted from hair at a notably lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluids), highlighting why hair drug screening is among the most challenging methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing ahead of confirmation if required. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which possess a shorter detection time.
  • Challenging to falsify: It's notably difficult to manipulate a hair drug test, leading to more reliable results.
  • Historical usage insight: It offers a usage pattern over time, not restricted to recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to be identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although commonly dubbed "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle located beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
