Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Creta, Oklahoma. Whether you require a test for drugs or alcohol, our expertise in hair testing ensures reliable results. Available in cities across the nation, we facilitate hair tests requiring 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body. Analyze for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customize your testing options.

Hair follicle drug testing has grown increasingly popular in recent years as an alternative to urine tests. Often required by employers, courts, and substance abuse experts, these tests support zero-tolerance policies and probation requirements. Hair testing's key advantage is its long detection window, typically up to 90 days, collected under observation, making it hard to alter. However, for recent usage within 5 days, urine tests remain crucial.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair strands provide extensive historical data of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the structure of the hair as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair can yield a detection timeline of up to roughly three months for alcohol and other drugs. The collection process is straightforward, relatively resistant to alteration, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch hair sample, roughly 200 strands (comparable to the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, amounts to 100mg, the optimal sample size for analysis and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests surpassing 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair isn't accessible, matching quantities of body hair can be gathered. References to head hair specifically pertain to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in the laboratory analysis of a drug test include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This process includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and transported, generating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing further data input that an electronic chain of custody system may not provide.

In Screening, a preliminary check is conducted to detect drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method for excluding drug consumption in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be legally valid. Any samples testing presumptively positive during Screening must undergo additional verification.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, more strands are taken from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from the hair at concentrations significantly lower than those obtained from other test methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening particularly challenging.

Confirmation of any initial positive result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to Confirmation, all samples with presumptive positive results are cleansed as necessary. The entire laboratory sequence, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the directives of ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug analyses can detect drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It's notably difficult to alter a hair drug test, enhancing result reliability.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a record of drug usage over a timeframe, not solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent usage: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses tend to be costlier than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites within hair strands.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
