Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle substance testing in Crystal, Oklahoma. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, our specialty is hair analysis, and we feature testing centers across all major cities nationwide capable of conducting these tests. Typically, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head’s crown or other body hair suffices. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific analysis needs.

Over the past few years, drug testing methods have increasingly utilized hair follicle tests. A significant number of employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair analysis over the conventional urine test. These tests are invaluable for firms with strict anti-drug policies, the judicial system, and individuals undergoing probation. The chief advantage of hair follicle drug testing lies in its extensive detection window of up to 90 days, involving direct supervision during the collection process, making cheating almost impossible. Yet, for monitoring drug use within a recent 5-day span, the urine test maintains its status as the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Seen as a robust tool for spotting alcohol and drug use, hair testing offers extended-term insight by capturing biomarkers within hair fibers as they grow. When gathered near the scalp, it can reveal up to roughly a 90-day timeframe for drug and alcohol use detection. Hair is easy to collect, not easy to tamper with, and straightforward to send.

Obtaining a 1.5-inch sample near the scalp, around 200 hair strands thick (comparable to a #2 pencil), results in 100mg, which is an optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, it’s advisable to use 150mg. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for specimen measurement is recommended. Alternatively, if scalp hair isn’t available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When we discuss head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test laboratory processing comprises four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is about integrating the initial sample into a lab’s system, including verifying the sample’s proper sealing and shipment, assigning a unique Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and entering any additional data that isn’t provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary assessment for drug presence. Though cost-effective for discounting drug use in most samples, positive screenings must be confirmed for court acceptance. Presumptive positives from Screening require an additional confirmation step.

For any presumptive positive screens during the Screening step, additional hair is selected from the original collection for Extraction. This step entails extracting drugs from hair at much lower levels than other methods such as urine or oral fluid, explaining the complexity in hair drug testing.

Confirmation of any detected positive in Screening is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation standards ISO / IEC 17025.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can uncover drug use over a 90-day span, unlike urine tests with shorter windows.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is notably tricky, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Shows usage history: It reflects a drug use pattern over time, rather than merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Recent use is undetectable: Drugs become detectable in hair after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variation: Hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly named "hair follicle tests", these tests actually assess the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
