Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluation services in Eagle City, Oklahoma. For those requiring a hair or alcohol screening, our specialty lies in hair testing, with facilities nationwide prepared to conduct such tests. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the head or body is typically needed. Hair tests can assess for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized testing solutions.

In recent years, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for substance evaluation. They are frequently mandated by employers, the judicial system, and Substance Abuse professionals over the regular urine test. Hair follicle tests are trusted by zero-tolerance employers, the judiciary, and probationers. Their primary advantage is a longer detection window, typically up to 90 days, observed under strict conditions, making them hard to bypass. Conversely, urine tests remain the best choice for detecting recent drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair maintains a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. If collected close to the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe of up to roughly 90 days for alcohol and drugs. It is easy to gather hair, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the ideal sample size for screening and confirmation. In the case of EtG, add-ons, and/or tests above 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. References to head hair imply scalp hair only, while body hair covers all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four main steps in processing a drug test result in the laboratory: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step in processing a sample into a laboratory’s system. This includes verifying the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial quick assessment for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is an economical measure to rule out drug consumption in most samples, a positive result needs confirmation to be court-admissible. Samples showing presumptive positivity in Screening require a secondary confirmation.

For samples that are presumptively positive in Screening, more hair is prepared from the original specimen for Extraction. During this process, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (ex. urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is completed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as needed. The entire lab workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Provides a detection span for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is extremely challenging to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing the reliability of results.
  • Offers historical insight: It reflects a timeline of drug use over time, instead of just detecting recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Can't detect recent consumption: Drugs become traceable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are more costly compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth variations affect the metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While often termed as "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
