Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in East Jackson, Oklahoma. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, our specialty is hair testing, with testing centers across all cities nationwide equipped to perform hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed, allowing for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customizable tests.

Lately, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals often choose hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are preferred by employers with zero-tolerance policies, court systems, and probation officers. The main advantage is a longer detection window of up to 90 days. These tests require an observed collection process and are nearly foolproof, though urine tests remain the most accurate for use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a record of long-term exposure to alcohol and substances by preserving biomarkers within the strands as they grow. Collected near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection timeframe of around 3 months for alcohol and substances. Hair collection is straightforward, tampering-resistant, and shipping-friendly.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) from the scalp provides 100mg, the optimal amount for testing and validation. For EtG, additional panels, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. Utilize a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent volume of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for generating a drug test result spans four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, the initial phase involves integrating a sample into a lab’s system, ensuring the sample was appropriately sealed and sent, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) at random, and completing any missing data entries absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial swift analysis for substances. While cost-efficient for excluding drug usage in many samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for court admissibility. Any samples that test preliminarily positive during Screening need further confirmation.

Should a sample test preliminary positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. During this process, drugs are separated from hair at lower concentration levels than seen in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting hair drug testing as one of the more challenging methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive preliminary result is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All preliminary positive samples are cleansed before confirmation, if necessary. Each laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair mark and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug evaluations can trace drug use back up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection windows of urine tests.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug evaluation is significantly challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Displays historical consumption: It affords a timeline of substance use over extended periods, differing from indications of recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations typically incur higher costs compared to alternative testing methods.
  • Result variations: Differences such as hair color and personal hair growth attributes can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", these analyses evaluate the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
