In Eldon, Oklahoma, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether you're in need of a drug or alcohol hair analysis, our expertise in hair testing is backed by a nationwide network of centers capable of conducting these tests across all cities. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body is adequate for analysis, capable of detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offering personalized testing solutions.

The trend toward using hair follicle drug tests has grown significantly, with many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts favoring them over conventional urine tests. This method is popular among employers with zero-tolerance policies for drug use, the court system, and individuals undergoing probation. Its main advantage is the extended period of drug detection, up to 90 days, completed through a monitored collection that minimizes the chance for cheating. However, for drug use identification over the past five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective means for identifying the use of alcohol and drugs. By capturing biomarkers in the hair fibers, a long-term history of substance intake is provided through the growing hair. Collected near the scalp, it offers a detection window of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, resistant to tampering, and easily transportable.

A 1.5-inch piece of approximately 200 hair strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp yields 100 mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels beyond 10, a sample of 150 mg is advised. Measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale is recommended. If scalp hair isn’t available, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, it refers solely to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase involving sample processing into a lab's system. This step includes ensuring the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry in cases lacking an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary quick examination for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to eliminate potential drug usage in many samples, positive screens necessitate confirmation to be legally valid. Presumptively positive samples in Screening require additional confirmation.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, more hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug screening the most challenging to perform.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Default and selectively positive samples are cleaned before confirmation as needed. The entire lab operation, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes evaluation under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guideline and covers ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection span of urine tests.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Hair drug tests are notably challenging to falsify, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Provides historical data: These tests can outline a pattern of drug use over time, unlike tests that show only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It generally takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become visible in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly compared to other testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Drug metabolite concentration in hair is subject to influences like hair color and personal variations in hair growth.

Note: Despite being commonly called "hair follicle tests", these tests analyze the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
