Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Enid, Oklahoma. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities in every city across the Nation prepared to conduct such tests. A requirement includes having 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair. This testing method allows analysis for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized testing options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly favored hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for this method over traditional urine tests. Hair tests cater to zero-tolerance policies of employers, judicial processes, and probation requirements. They offer a longer detection window, up to 90 days, during an observed collection process, making them almost impossible to cheat. But for drugs consumed within the past five days, urine tests still remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can encapsulate biomarkers within its fibers, offering an extended history of alcohol and drugs. When taken close to the scalp, hair can yield a detection range of up to about three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch selection of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the circumference of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp equates to 100mg of hair, an optimal amount ideal for screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, supplemental tests, and/or assessments beyond ten panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable portion of body hair can be obtained. When mentioning head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair alone. Body hair pertains to all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal components in the laboratory diagnosis of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the introductory processing of a specimen within a laboratory's framework. This encompasses confirming the specimen was sealed and sent correctly, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody mechanism.

Screening is a preliminary expedited assessment for substances of misuse. Although Screening offers a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be corroborated for legal admissibility. Any samples preliminarily positive in Screening necessitate subsequent confirmation.

If a specimen indicates a potential positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at a significantly lower concentration than with other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug screening presents more complexity.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcomes is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All initially positive samples undergo washing before confirmation, as necessary. The entire laboratory operation from Accessioning through Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair directive and accreditation compliant with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection range: Hair drug assessments can reveal drug utilization for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a briefer detection scope.
  • Resistance to deceit: It's exceedingly tricky to falsify a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Supplies historic data: It offers insight into patterns of drug consumption over extended periods, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent intake: It requires roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations typically incur higher costs than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair hue and personal differences in hair growth can impact the metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", this test scrutinizes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
