In Fallis, Oklahoma, Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing. If a hair or alcohol test is necessary, our expertise in hair testing is available in testing locations across every city nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head is needed, but body hair might be utilized too. Our tests can evaluate drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored hair testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a frequently used method over standard urine tests for drug detection. This change is evident among employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts who prefer it over urine tests. Employers with strict drug use policies and courts use hair tests, especially as it reveals drug use over a longer period, up to 90 days. The urine test remains preferable for drug use within the preceding 5 days due to its precision.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has emerged as an effective method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair traps biomarkers within the strands as it grows, offering a comprehensive history of alcohol and drug use. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal consumption patterns over a period of approximately three months. Hair collection is straightforward, moderately resistant to tampering, and easily transportable.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (equivalent in size to a #2 pencil) from near the scalp yields 100mg, which is ideal for testing and verification. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale for weighing. If scalp hair isn't available, an equal quantity of body hair can be gathered. Head hair specifically refers to hair on the scalp. In contrast, body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The lab processing for drug test results encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step, where a sample is integrated into a lab's system. This process includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any necessary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial assessment for drug presence. Though cost-effective for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be verified to hold up in legal settings. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening need further confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for further Examination. Drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening uniquely challenging.

Confirmation for any presumptively positive screening result involves techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo a wash before confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 certification standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection range: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, contrasting with shorter detection periods of urine tests.
  • Cheating resistance: Cheating on a hair drug test is exceedingly challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insights: Tests reveal drug use patterns over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug testing generally incurs greater expenses compared to other methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual growth rates can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
