Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Fanshawe, Oklahoma. Specializing in hair tests, we offer centers Nationwide for drug or alcohol hair testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is required. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing options.

Hair follicle drug testing has gained traction as a preferred method in recent years. It's now often chosen by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals over conventional urine tests. Used primarily for zero-tolerance policies, court cases, and probation, hair tests offer extended detection of drug use, up to 90 days, and are conducted with observed collection, making them nearly foolproof. Despite this, urine tests remain more accurate for drug usage within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a robust instrument for identifying alcohol and drug use. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of a growing hair strand, hair offers a prolonged record of alcohol and other drug usage. When a sample is collected close to the scalp, it can provide up to a three-month window for detecting various substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, not easily tampered with, and simple to mail.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprised of around 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample size for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or analyses exceeding ten panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair isn’t available, a similar quantity of body hair may be collected. 'Head hair' refers strictly to scalp hair, while 'body hair' encompasses other types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The four principal steps in processing a drug test result in the lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves initially integrating a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step encompasses ensuring the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any remaining data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a quick initial drug check. While cost-efficient for eliminating drug use in most samples, confirmed positive results are necessary for court cases. Samples identified as presumptively positive during Screening require a further confirmation stage.

If Screening indicates a sample is presumptively positive, additional hair is drawn from the original specimen for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods like urine or oral fluid, thus making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology.

Positive screening results are confirmed through methods like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive specimens are washed pre-confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed under both the College of American Pathologists (CAP) Hair designation and accreditation aligned with ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which provide a shorter detection span.
  • Mitigated cheating: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: Provides a pattern of drug use over a duration, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair about 5-7 days post-usage.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally costs more than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While often termed "hair follicle tests," the examination actually assesses the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
