Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Faxon, Oklahoma. If a hair-based drug or alcohol assessment is required, our expertise in this method shines. With centers across the nation, including in every city, we offer this service. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the scalp is essential, although body hair can sometimes be used. Our hair evaluations can be customized for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing needs.

Hair follicle drug testing has been increasingly favored in recent times. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists are opting for hair tests over traditional urine assessments. This methodology supports zero-tolerance policies, court mandates, and probation requirements. The chief advantage is its extended drug detection window of up to 90 days, observed during collection, making it nearly impervious to tampering. However, to assess recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests maintain their precision.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures lasting evidence of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When gathered near the scalp, it can offer roughly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and various drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, somewhat tough to tamper with, and simple to ship.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (around the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, the perfect amount for both screening and confirming. For EtG, additional testing, and/or panels beyond 10, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It's best to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary phases in lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the first phase of processing a sample within a lab system. This entails checking that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any missing data not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. While it is a cost-efficient mechanism to eliminate drug presence in most samples, a favorable screening result necessitates further confirmation to be court-admissible. All samples testing preliminary positive in Screening need additional validation.

If a sample shows a preliminary positive during the Screening step, additional hair is taken from the sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are removed from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other tests (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any preliminary positive results in Screening is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with potential positives are washed before confirmation if required. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a more limited detection window.
  • Hard to falsify: Hair drug tests are highly resistant to tampering, enhancing result reliability.
  • Historical insight: These tests illustrate a timeline of drug use over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent ingestion: Generally, drugs take 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically have a higher cost than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Aspects such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth may influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Usually called "hair follicle tests," this test analyzes the hair strand, not the scalp's hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
