Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug assessment services in Fay, Oklahoma. Whether it's a hair drug or alcohol screening required, we excel in such tests, with facilities available across all U.S. cities. Generally, at least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be used. Analyzing for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing needs is possible.

More often today, drug tests include hair follicle analysis. This method is favored by many employers, courts, and substance specialists over typical urine tests. Hair tests benefit businesses with zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and those on probation due to a longer detection timeframe—up to 90 days—and observation during collection, making cheating nearly impossible. Yet, for spotting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests are still preferred.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing has emerged as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged account of substance use by capturing biomarkers in the fibers of the maturing hair strand. When obtained near the scalp, hair is capable of offering a detection window of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of about 200 strands of hair (resembling the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields approximately 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for analysis and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or analyses beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advocated. It is suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar quantity of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, we are specifically indicating scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The procedure for processing a drug test result in the laboratory encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial entry of a sample into the laboratory’s workflow. This step includes verifying the integrity and proper shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening entails a preliminary examination for substances of abuse. Although Screening serves as a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug use for most samples, a positive result must be validated to be legally admissible. Any samples with a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate subsequent confirmation.

In cases where a sample yields a presumptive positive in Screening, more hair is collected from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. At this stage, substances are extracted from hair at a considerably lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies to execute.

Validation of any positive screening outcome is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that presumptively test positive undergo washing prior to validation as required. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Resistance to manipulation: It's extremely challenging to deceive a hair drug test, therefore the results are more precise.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals a pattern of drug use spanning a period, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It requires about 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to alternative testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand and not the follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle tests and traditional urine tests in Fay, OK, the former demonstrates superior accuracy and reliability. Hair tests ensure a more accurate detection of substances, providing a dependable solution. This advanced detection capability makes hair testing an appealing choice over urine tests for many sectors.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
