Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle drug assessments in Foraker, Oklahoma. When hair or alcohol tests are needed, our organization specializes in these types of evaluations and operates centers across all U.S. cities for hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body are required for testing. These tests determine the presence of drugs, alcohol/ETG or can be tailored for other hair-based evaluations.

Lately, the prevalence of using hair follicle drug evaluations has been on the rise. A number of companies, judiciary bodies, and Substance Abuse specialists now prefer hair exams over traditional urine tests. Employers with stringent no-drug policies, courts, and probation services often choose hair follicle testing. Their main benefit is the extended detection timeframe, which can trace drug use up to 90 days, ensuring an observed and nearly foolproof collection process. However, recent drug use within 5 days is more accurately detected with a urine test.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair embeds a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by trapping biomarkers in the strands of hair as they grow. When collected from near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe of up to about three months for drugs and alcohol. It is easy to collect, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil), collected nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for accurate weight measurement. If there is an absence of scalp hair, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered instead. Reference to head hair indicates scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in processing a drug test result at the laboratory include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the sample's initial integration into the laboratory system. Steps include ensuring the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any extra data entry that an electronic chain of custody system does not cover.

Screening is a preliminary check for substance abuse. While cost-effective, positive results in Screening must be confirmed for court admissibility. Any samples that test positive in Screening require an additional confirmation step.

Samples testing positive in Screening will have more hair extracted and prepared for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are removed from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most complicated procedure to execute.

Confirmation for any positive initial findings is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing presumptive positives are washed as required before confirmation. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter window.
  • Challenge to circumvent: It is nearly impossible to evade a hair drug test, thus ensuring precise results.
  • Historical data provision: It offers insight into a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: Drugs need approximately 5-7 days before they become detectable in hair samples.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Aspects such as hair color and individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing drug testing methods in Foraker, OK, hair follicle testing stands out for its superior detection capabilities over conventional urine tests.
Hair tests provide a significantly longer detection window, offering a more comprehensive view of an individual's substance use history.

While urine tests are effective in detecting recent drug use, hair follicle tests are less susceptible to manipulation, ensuring a more dependable result.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Foraker, OK, benefit from the extended detection window offered by hair follicle testing. This method allows for the detection of drug use over an extended period—up to 90 days.
Such a broad timeframe gives employers a detailed view of an individual's substance use history, which can be critical for making informed hiring or retention decisions.

Hair tests capture a long record of substance use, offering a timeline that urine tests cannot match.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
