Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing in Foyil, Oklahoma. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with testing centers available in every city across the nation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is necessary for the test. Hair exams can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer other tailored testing solutions.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists prefer it over traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial systems, and individuals on probation. The key advantage is its extended detection time, usually up to 90 days, conducted under supervision, and it’s nearly impossible to deceive. Nevertheless, urine tests remain best for detecting recent drug use within a five-day timeframe.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as an effective resource for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair offers a lengthy record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the emerging hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a roughly 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample of around 200 hairs (similar in thickness to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for examination and confirmation. For EtG, additional panels, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We endorse weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, an equivalent amount of body hair might be used. When mentioning head hair, we talk about scalp hair solely. Body hair signifies any other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four key steps conducted in the laboratory for processing a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves initially entering a sample into a laboratory’s system. This involves ensuring the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and conducting any supplementary data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary speedy check for drugs of abuse. Screening is a cost-effective method to rule out drug use in most cases, but a positive screen must be confirmed to be permissible in legal proceedings. Any samples that appear positive in Screening need further confirmation.

If a sample seems positive in the Screening phase, more hair is taken from the first specimen and readied for Extraction. Here, substances are extracted from hair at a lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening one of the most challenging techniques to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples suspected to be positive are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can detect substance use for as long as 90 days, contrasting with urine tests which have a more limited detection timeframe.
  • Difficulty to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is quite tough, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can show a pattern of substance use over some time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to spot recent use: It needs approximately 5-7 days for substances to become visible in hair.
  • Higher expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug testing means.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the levels of drug components in hair.

Note: While frequently referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
