Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Granite, Oklahoma. If you require a drug or alcohol test using hair samples, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to specialist, with facilities across all cities nationwide equipped for hair testing. Generally, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is necessary from the crown or body. These tests can be tailored for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific hair testing needs.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are increasingly preferring this over traditional urine tests. Hair tests are crucial for employers with zero-tolerance policies, court orders, and individuals on probation. The major advantage is its extended detection window, usually up to 90 days, under observed collection, making it hard to manipulate. For detection within the last 5 days, however, urine testing remains the most reliable option.

What it is, How it works

Hair screening has established itself as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair fibers retain long-term biomarker records of alcohol and drugs by embedding them as the hair naturally grows. Obtaining hair samples from near the scalp can offer roughly a 90-day detection window for substances like alcohol and other drugs. It is straightforward to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A section of hair measuring about 1.5 inches and approximately 200 strands (akin to the girth of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg, which is an optimal sample for both screening and validation. For EtG, supplementary checks, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of a sample is advisable. It’s suggested to use a jeweler's scale to measure the sample weight. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent volume of body hair can be used. References to head hair imply exclusively scalp hair. Whereas body hair encompasses other hair forms (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the process of incorporating a sample into a laboratory's system, confirming the sample's appropriate sealing and shipping status, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any extra data not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although it is a cost-effective way to exclude drug use in many samples, a positive screen must be validated to be legally admissible. Samples showing a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation procedure.

In the event of a presumptive positive result during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction process. Drugs are removed from hair during this phase at a much lower concentration than other methods, such as urine or oral fluid tests, making hair drug screening one of the most complex methodologies to conduct.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcome is achieved through techniques like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptively positive samples receive a wash prior to confirmation as required. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specification and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a more limited detection range.
  • Cheating is challenging: Hair drug tests are hard to manipulate, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical data provision: Hair tests can reflect usage trends over time, rather than just short-term use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests incur higher costs compared to other testing strategies.
  • Variability in outcomes: Factors including hair color and personal hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the actual test examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
