Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Greenfield, Oklahoma. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol evaluation, our expertise in hair testing spans the nation, offering services in every city. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is necessary. Hair tests are suitable for detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other bespoke testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle tests have become a preferred method for drug testing. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now favor hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Zero-tolerance policies often utilize this method due to its extensive detection window of up to 90 days, rigorous observation during collection, and its resistance to tampering. However, for identifying recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain unmatched in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair encapsulates a comprehensive record of alcohol and drug intake by preserving biomarkers within the hair strand as it grows. When the sample is taken from near the scalp, hair can detect alcohol and drugs for up to around three months. The collection of hair is straightforward, resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair specimen consisting of roughly 200 strands (comparable to a #2 pencil in thickness) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, considered optimal for both screening and confirmatory procedures. For EtG, additional tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, it's advisable to use 150mg of hair. It's suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler's scale. Should scalp hair not be an option, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be submitted. "Head hair" refers specifically to scalp hair, while "body hair" includes all other variants (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The primary phases in a lab's drug testing workflow are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial intake of a specimen into a laboratory system, ensuring the sample was properly sealed and transported, generating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data entry omitted by an electronic custody system.

Screening constitutes a preliminary assessment for substance misuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient means to negate drug usage across most samples, courts require confirmation of any positive results. Presumptive positives from Screening necessitate a confirmatory test.

For samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the specimen for the Extraction phase. At this point, drugs are isolated from hair at concentrations significantly lower than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug testing the most challenging to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screen result is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. As necessary, samples with presumptive positives undergo a washing process before confirmation. This comprehensive laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to evaluations by the CAP (College of American Pathologists) and ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Detects drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter spans.
  • Hard to cheat: High resistance to evasion attempts, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Chronological data offered: Supplies an extensive view of drug consumption patterns over a timeline, beyond recent use.

Limitations:

  • Misses recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair generally after 5-7 days.
  • Cost factor: Hair drug tests typically come at a higher cost compared to other methods.
  • Variability in outcomes: Drug metabolite levels can be influenced by hair color and individual growth differences.

Note: Although often labeled "hair follicle tests," the procedure assesses the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Greenfield, OK
Hair follicle tests offer superior accuracy compared to traditional urine tests. Their ability to detect a wider range of substances over an extended period makes them ideal for rigorous drug policies. Unlike urine tests that often cover only a short timeframe, hair testing provides a more comprehensive assessment, offering unbeatable reliability for employers and regulatory bodies.

Extended Detection Window

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
