Located in Harris, Oklahoma, Accredited Drug Testing offers proficient hair follicle drug testing services. If you require a hair drug or alcohol assessment, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with facilities across cities Nationwide that perform these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed on the head or body. Hair tests are effective for detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing solutions.

In recent years, hair follicle drug tests have become a more favored method for detecting substance use. Employers, legal entities, and substance abuse experts prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. These tests benefit employers with strict drug use policies, judicial systems, and individuals on probation. A major advantage is the extended detection period, usually up to 90 days, compiled through a supervised collection process, making it extremely difficult to adulterate. Urine tests remain most accurate for drugs used in the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests have emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged historical record of alcohol and drug presence by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of growing hair. When gathered close to the scalp, hair can present a detection period of roughly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, rather challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion consisting of around 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for analysis and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's recommended to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar quantity of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four key stages in the laboratory evaluation of a drug test outcome: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s framework. This stage ensures proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

During Screening, an initial rapid assessment is done for substances of abuse. While Screening is an economical approach to eliminate drug usage for most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be legally valid. Samples preliminarily positive during Screening necessitate secondary verification.

If a sample is preliminarily positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Preparation. In this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than seen in other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), marking hair drug testing as the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screenshot is managed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All preliminarily positive samples undergo cleaning prior to confirmation if required. The comprehensive laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a lesser detection period.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Manipulating hair drug test outcomes is quite difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides use history: It delivers a timeline of drug use, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair only about 5-7 days after use.
  • Expensive: Hair drug tests are typically costlier compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the actual test analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
