In Idabel, Oklahoma, Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug tests. Whether it's for drugs or alcohol, we provide specialized services through national testing centers capable of hair analysis. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is needed. Our tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a popular choice for drug screenings. It's preferred by employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals over traditional urine tests. This method supports zero-tolerance policies with courts and probation cases, thanks to its 90-day detection range, reliable observation process, and resistance to tampering. Yet, urine tests remain optimal for detecting recent use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shaft. Hair collected near the scalp can offer a detection window for alcohol and drugs of up to roughly 3 months. The collection of hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (approximating the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the preferred quantity for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be utilized. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

Four principal phases are integral to the lab processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial entry of a sample into a laboratory’s database. This process confirms the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any outstanding data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in the majority of samples, a positive result from Screening necessitates confirmation to be valid in a legal setting. Samples that test presumptive positive in Screening need verification through secondary confirmation.

If Screening suggests a sample is positive, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a significantly lower concentration relative to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which underscores why hair drug screening is amongst the most challenging methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positivity are washed before confirmation if required. The entire laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is subjected to review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) designation for Hair and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests that feature a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is notably challenging to alter a hair drug test, thus enhancing the precision of results.
  • Offers historical insights: It reveals a pattern of drug usage over time, rather than merely indicating recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Detection in hair occurs approximately 5-7 days after drug intake.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur greater costs compared to alternative drug testing methods.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements such as hair pigmentation and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
