Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing services in Hinton, Oklahoma. For those requiring drug or alcohol analysis, our speciality is in hair testing, available through our numerous centers across the nation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is sufficient. Tests can detect substances such as drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Recently, the prevalence of hair follicle drug tests has risen, with a preference over traditional urine tests by many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts. These tests are favored by organizations enforcing strict anti-drug policies, judges, and probation officers. A notable advantage is their extended detection period, revealing drug use up to 90 days prior, collected via an observed method that is near impossible to falsify. However, urine remains optimal for recent, 5-day use.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an exceptional method for spotting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair records long-term alcohol and drug history by capturing biomarkers within the threads of the expanding hair strand. When harvested near the scalp, hair offers up to around a 90-day detection frame for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (akin to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the perfect sample for assessment and verification. For EtG, supplements, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is suggested. It is advisable to measure the specimen using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. References to head hair imply scalp hair only. Body hair includes all other hair varieties (beard, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four key steps in the laboratory analysis of a drug test result, which include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the initial integration of a sample into the lab's system. This step ensures the sample's seal and shipment were handled correctly, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any extra data entry not captured in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening acts as an initial rapid examination for drug abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to rule out drug use on most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be court-admissible. Samples that are preliminarily positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests preliminarily positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are removed from hair at a lower concentration than in other testing methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

The verification of any positive screening outcome is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are rinsed before confirmation if needed. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the whole lab procedure is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to deceive: It's notably difficult to manipulate a hair drug test, making outcomes more reliable.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals a trajectory of drug use over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become noticeable in hair only after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Inconsistent outcomes: Aspects like hair color and personal variations in hair growth may impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While typically termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Hinton, OK, hair follicle testing is superior to urine testing for several reasons. First, hair tests have a longer detection window, identifying substance use over weeks or even months. Second, the accuracy of hair testing is higher, reducing the chances of false negatives or positives. These attributes make hair testing a foolproof option for those seeking comprehensive results.

Extended Detection Window

Through hair follicle testing in Hinton, OK, detection of drug use spans a generous 90-day window, substantially longer than the few days detectable by urine tests. This extended period provides businesses with a thorough understanding of an individual's substance history, offering valuable insights absent in shorter-span test methods.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests offer a robust solution to sample tampering, significantly minimizing the risk of adulteration in Hinton, OK. Given its observed collection process, this testing method ensures the authenticity and integrity of samples, providing employers with results that are both reliable and beyond dispute.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
