Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Hollis, Oklahoma. Whether you're looking for a hair drug or alcohol evaluation, our specialized centers nationwide facilitate hair testing. Typically, hair samples from the crown or body measuring 1.5 to 2 inches are required. Analyze hair samples for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific testing needs.

Over recent times, hair follicle drug evaluations have become more prevalent. Many institutions, juridical authorities, and substance abuse experts now prefer this method over the traditional urine analysis. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, legal courts, and individuals under probation utilize hair tests. The main advantage is its extended detection window of up to 90 days, making it nearly impossible to substitute or alter, though urine tests best detect recent 5-day usage.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing has emerged as an effective approach for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands, by capturing biomarkers within their fibers as they grow, offer an extended history of substance use. Specifically, when hair is sourced closely from the scalp, it can reveal a detection period for alcohol and drugs of up to about three months. Hair collection is straightforward, with limited potential for tampering, and convenient for transportation.

A 1.5-inch section encompassing nearly 200 hair strands (roughly comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) positioned nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and verification purposes. For analyses involving EtG, ancillary components, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weight of 150mg is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is suggested. In situations where scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be utilized. In this context, "head hair" pertains strictly to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the laboratory process for deriving a result from a drug test encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning constitutes the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory's procedures. This includes verifying proper sealing and transport of the sample, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any supplementary data not available via an electronic chain of custody mechanism.

Screening serves as a preliminary assessment for the presence of drugs. While it’s an economical approach to eliminate drug use in the majority of specimens, any positive screening result necessitates further confirmation to be legally defensible. Samples that are presumptively positive in the Screening stage must undergo an additional confirmatory process.

For any sample presumed positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction stage. Drugs in hair are extracted at lower concentrations compared to other methods such as urine or oral fluid, presenting a unique challenge for hair drug screening.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques conduct the Confirmation of any positive screening outcomes. Presumptive positive samples undergo cleaning before the confirmation if needed. The entire laboratory cycle, from Accessioning to Confirmation, abides by the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation along with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Reduced chances of tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, thus ensuring higher accuracy of the results.
  • Offers historical insight: Instead of just identifying recent drug use, it provides a comprehensive pattern of usage over time.

Drawbacks:

  • Unable to detect recent use: A time frame of roughly 5-7 days is required before drugs become discernible in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier compared to alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and individual differences in hair growth rate can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
